Skills labs Video skills check

Tick a skill or build your own. Upload the video. Review the steps that matter.

Faculty pick a procedure, or build one, upload a video of one student performing it, and NurseKind AI reports each step as observed, not shown correctly, or can't tell, with time ranges to check. It advises. Faculty decide.

One recording. Three skills ticked. Here is what faculty get back.

A summary first, then a card per skill with the critical steps open and every step's time range. This is an example, not a real student. Faculty review every observation.

Skills check: 3 skills selectedSummary

Faculty review required. These are observations from the recording. They are not a grade and do not change the overall score.

Vital signs, including manual blood pressure2 critical steps to review
15 observed, 1 not shown correctly, 2 can't tell, 2 not assessable from video.
Foley catheter insertion1 critical step to review
14 observed, 1 not shown correctly, 2 can't tell, 2 not assessable from video.
Hand hygieneAll observed
Soap and water method selected. Every step was seen.
Example only, not a real student. One student, one recording, three skills ticked. Each skill has its own card below.
  1. 01

    Observed

The step was seen, with the time range it was seen at.

  2. 02

    Not shown correctly

The step was missed or done differently from the step list. Critical steps come first, so these are the first thing faculty see.

  3. 03

    Can't tell from this video

Out of frame, too far away or too dark to judge. Nothing in this state is held against the student.

  4. 04

    Not assessable from video

The step happens off camera, such as checking an order or documenting. It is listed but never given a verdict.

  5. 05

    Worth replaying

The result for this step was uncertain, so it is flagged for you to check first.

  1. 01

    Critical steps open first

Steps tied to infection control and patient safety are marked critical. They sit at the top, open.

  2. 02

Every step has a time range

Each range tells you where to look in your own recording, so you can watch the moment yourself.

  3. 03

    Speech steps need audio

Patient ID and telling the patient the readings are spoken. If the student does not say them, they come back as can't tell.

  1. 01

Sterile technique is the hard part

Drapes and hands often block the view of a sterile field, so expect more can't tell here. That is the card being honest, not the student failing.

  2. 02

Off-camera steps are listed, not judged

Allergy checks and documentation appear as not assessable, so nothing is silently skipped.

  3. 03

    Critical steps by default

The steps that matter most for infection control and patient safety are marked critical, and listed first.

Foley catheter insertionExample

Faculty review required. These are observations from the recording. They are not a grade and do not change the overall score.

Critical steps
Sterile field set up from the outer edgeObserved
Seen at 00:48–01:15

Hand hygieneExample

Faculty review required. These are observations from the recording. They are not a grade and do not change the overall score.

Soap and water
Lathered and rubbed all surfaces for at least 15 to 20 secondsObserved
Seen at 00:14–00:37
Tap turned off with a paper towelObserved
Seen at 00:52–00:56
Other steps

Jewelry and sleeves, warm water, fingertips down, rinsing, drying and the rest.
Example only, not a real student. Method selected by faculty before upload.
  1. 01

    No score

Nothing here becomes a number, and nothing feeds the overall score.

  2. 02

    No pass or fail

The decision to sign off a student stays with faculty, always.

  3. 03

    No names

The analysis is never told who is in the video and does not identify anyone.

  4. 04

    One student per recording

The option disappears when more than one student is selected.

Results appear after the Observed behaviors on the recording, and in the saved record, the faculty viewer and the PDF. Students do not see them in the app.

02 The problem

Skills checkoffs mean hours of watching.

Programs record skills lab practice and checkoffs, then faculty watch the footage to see whether each step happened: hand hygiene, the sterile field, the vital signs, the medication checks.

Most of it is straightforward. The few steps that carry patient risk are what faculty most need to find, and they are buried in the recording.

The skills check does a first pass over the steps and points faculty to the moments worth watching. The judgment stays with faculty.

03 How it works

Four steps. Use ours or build yours.

01

Record the practice

Film one student at a time with the hands and work area in frame. Any phone or lab camera that produces an MP4 works.

02

Open Upload Video and tick the skill

Choose the student, then tick one or more skills: the five below, or ones you built yourself. For hand hygiene and medication administration, pick the method (soap and water or alcohol rub, oral or injection). The analysis looks for every step of each skill you tick.

03

Upload the recording

Upload an MP4 of up to 40 minutes. It is analyzed alongside the transcript and observed behaviors, then deleted.

04

Review the Skills check

Critical steps are open first. Other steps are collapsed. Go to each time range, replay the flagged moments, and make your call.

Want a skill we don't list? Build it first, then tick it here.

04 The five skills

Step lists adapted from open sources

Each skill has a fixed list of steps. Steps that need speech or happen off camera are handled separately, so the analysis never guesses at them.

Open RN content is used under CC BY 4.0 and shown with attribution. Open RN's sterile field chapter gives principles rather than a checklist, so those steps are our adaptation of it. Always follow your program's and agency's policy.

Open RN

Hand hygiene

Soap and water: jewelry and sleeves, warm water, lathering for at least 15 to 20 seconds, fingertips down, rinsing, drying, and the tap turned off with a paper towel. Alcohol rub: enough product, every surface, rubbed until dry. Faculty pick one before upload.

Open RN

Vital signs, including manual blood pressure

Privacy, identity and explanation, temperature, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturation, patient position and cuff placement, a two-step manual blood pressure, readings stated aloud, and cleaning up.

Open RN

Medication administration: oral or injection

The six-rights checks (spoken aloud), then the route you choose: oral technique and staying until each medication is swallowed, or vial and syringe handling, site, technique, hold time, needle safety and sharps.

Open RN

Sterile field and sterile gloves

Package and surface checks, opening the kit without crossing the field, adding items, pouring solution, applying and removing sterile gloves, and keeping the field sterile. The field steps are our adaptation of Open RN principles.

Open RN

Foley catheter insertion

Privacy, peri-care, the sterile field and sterile gloving, antiseptic strokes, the nondominant hand, insertion depth, balloon, securement and drainage bag placement.

Attribution

Not a replacement for your procedure

The lists are a starting point drawn from open sources. They have not been validated as a competency standard, and your program or agency policy always applies.

05 Build your own skill

Your procedure, your steps

List what you want to see, or paste your checklist. The AI rewrites each item as steps a recording can show. You decide what stays.

01

List what you want to see

Up to 30 items, one per line. Paste a checklist if you have one, or copy one of our five and change it.

02

Review the steps

Each item becomes one or more steps. You label what a camera can show, mark the critical ones, and edit anything. The AI can suggest a missing step. It's added only if you accept it.

03

Save and tick it

Your skill appears beside the five on Upload Video and reports the same way.

Private

Only you can use it

Other faculty can't see it. A faculty admin can read every skill at your school and see who wrote it, but can't change yours.

Your standard

We don't review the steps

NurseKind doesn't review faculty-written steps. Your program's and agency's policy applies, and results say they're defined by your institution.

Advisory

Same as the five

No score, no pass or fail, and nothing changes the overall score.

Limits

Thirty steps a skill

Up to 30 steps a skill and five skills a video. A combined limit applies per video, and the screen shows it as you tick.

06 Where it fits

Faster to the moments that matter. The call stays yours.

What the skills check does
  • Walks through every step of the procedure and reports what it could see
  • Puts the infection-control and patient-safety steps first
  • Gives time ranges so faculty know where to look for each step
  • Flags steps it could not judge, and steps where the result was uncertain
  • Runs alongside the observed behaviors and your custom rubric on the same recording
What stays with faculty
  • Deciding whether a student passes or needs more practice
  • Judging technique quality, such as angle, pressure and touch
  • Anything that happens off camera or is never said aloud
  • Matching the steps to your program's and agency's procedure
07 Getting good results

Record it so the steps can be seen

Framing

Hands and work area in frame

A steady camera at a distance that shows the hands, the equipment and the patient site. Out-of-frame steps come back as can't tell.

Light

Even light, no shadows over the field

Dry time, glove contact and the sterile field are hard to judge in a dark or backlit shot.

Sound

Let students say the checks aloud

Patient identification, the six rights and site landmarks are verbal steps. If they are not said aloud, they cannot be assessed.

One student

One student per recording

The skills check covers one student. Record each student separately, up to 40 minutes per file.

08 Privacy and control

Faculty-only, encrypted, deleted after analysis

Per institution

Turned on for your program

Video upload is a setting NurseKind enables for your institution. Faculty and faculty admin accounts see the Upload Video tab once it is on.

Deleted

The video is not kept

The video is deleted when the analysis finishes. It is never kept for playback.

Encrypted

Results stored with the record

The text results are encrypted, visible to faculty, and deleted with the assessment record.

Students

Not shown in the app

Students do not see skills results in the app. They are included if a student requests their records.

09 FAQ

Questions about the video skills check

No. It reports what it can see for each step: observed, not shown correctly, or can't tell from this video. There is no score, no pass or fail, and nothing feeds the overall score. Faculty watch the flagged moments and make the call.
Hand hygiene (soap and water or alcohol rub), vital signs including manual blood pressure, medication administration (oral or injection), sterile field and sterile gloves, and Foley catheter insertion, plus any skill your own faculty build (see below). Faculty tick the skill before uploading, and choose the method for hand hygiene and for medication administration. The analysis looks for every step of it.
They are adapted from Open RN's open nursing skills textbook (CC BY 4.0). The sterile field steps are derived from Open RN's sterile field principles, because that chapter has no checklist. Attribution is shown with the results. They are a starting point, not a replacement for your program's or agency's procedure.
Yes. Faculty and faculty admins can write a name and the things they want to see, and NurseKind AI turns the list into steps a recording can show. The faculty member reviews and edits the steps, then saves. A skill is private to its author, and a faculty admin can see who made each one. It reports like the five built-in skills: advisory, no score. NurseKind has not clinically reviewed faculty-written steps, and results say they are defined by your institution.
Only you can use it. Other faculty can't see it. A faculty admin at your school can read every skill and see who wrote it, but can't edit yours.
No. The skills check is for a recording of exactly one student. When more than one student is selected, the option is not available. The six observed behaviors still work for group recordings.
They are reported as can't tell, or as not assessable from video when a step is something a camera can never show, such as verifying an order. Nothing in either state is held against the student.
Steps tied to infection control and patient safety. They are listed first and open by default. The default set is NurseKind's starting point, and no source defines critical steps for every program.
One continuous recording of one student with the hands and the work area in frame, steady and well lit. Steps that are out of frame come back as can't tell. MP4 files up to 40 minutes are supported.
Yes. The skills check is separate from your rubric. On the Upload Video tab the rubric, the observed behaviors and the skills check all run on the same recording, and the skills results are never merged into the rubric scores.
We have not validated it against faculty scoring, so we do not publish an accuracy figure. Steps where the result is uncertain are flagged for review. That is why every result is evidence for faculty review and not a verdict.
Video upload is a setting NurseKind turns on for your institution, and the skills check is part of the Complete plan. Faculty and faculty admin accounts see the Upload Video tab once it is enabled. Ask us for current pricing.
The video is analyzed and then deleted. The text results are stored encrypted with the assessment record, are visible to faculty, and are not shown to students in the app. They are included if a student requests their records.
