Tips for Best Results
- Use a quiet room, background noise affects transcription accuracy
- Speak first: the AI patient waits for you to initiate the conversation
- Use a laptop or desktop with a built-in or external microphone for best audio quality
- Aim for at least 30 seconds of conversation before ending the session
- Review the rubric categories before starting so you know what the AI will evaluate

Recording Interactions
For Best Results
- Position your phone strategically:
- Place it between you and the patient, 6-12 inches away
- On a bedside table or flat surface works great
- Avoid holding the phone, it creates handling noise
- Choose a quiet environment:
- Close doors if possible
- Avoid high-traffic hallways
- Turn off TVs or radios nearby
- Speak naturally and clearly:
- No need to speak louder than normal conversation volume
- Avoid talking over each other, take turns speaking
- Start the recording with YOU (the nursing student) speaking first
- Recording length:
- Minimum 30 seconds for valid assessment
- Ideal: 2-5 minutes for meaningful interaction
- Maximum: 10 minutes (longer is fine, but first 10 min analyzed)
• Recording in noisy hallways or busy nurses' stations
• Keeping phone in your pocket (muffled audio)
• Starting recording with patient speaking first (confuses AI)
• Recording with TV or monitor audio in background
What Gets Recorded
Only audio is captured - no video, no patient identifiers. The AI transcribes what is said and analyzes communication patterns, empathy markers, and therapeutic presence indicators.
Privacy: Recordings are encrypted and stored securely. No patient names or identifying information should be recorded. The AI focuses on how you communicate, not who you're communicating with.
Understanding Your Results
Assessment Stages
NurseKind AI provides feedback in two stages:
Stage 1: Overall Humanistic Score (0-100)
This is your total score based on the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model. It reflects:
- Empathy - Acknowledging patient feelings and concerns
- Active Listening - Showing you're hearing and understanding
- Respect for Dignity - Person-centered communication
- Therapeutic Presence - Being fully present with the patient
Stage 2: Detailed Feedback
This goes deeper with:
- Scores for each NCJMM component (Recognize Cues, Analyze Cues, etc.)
- Specific examples from your conversation - quoted directly
- What you did well - strengths to build on
- Opportunities for growth - specific, actionable suggestions
- Alternative approaches - example phrases you could use next time
How Scores Work
- 90-100: Exceptional humanistic nursing communication
- 75-89: Strong therapeutic presence with room to grow
- 60-74: Developing skills, focus on feedback areas
- Below 60: Significant opportunities for improvement
PDF Reports
Tap "Download PDF" to export a professional report you can:
- Submit to your instructor for evaluation
- Save in your professional portfolio
- Review later to track your progress
- Share with clinical preceptors or mentors
Troubleshooting
App Won't Open or Crashes
- Force close the app completely (swipe up from app switcher)
- Restart your iPhone
- Check for iOS updates: Settings → General → Software Update
- Update NurseKind AI from the App Store if available
- Delete and reinstall app as last resort (your data is saved in the cloud)
Microphone Not Working
If you see "Microphone access required" or can't record:
- Go to iPhone Settings → Privacy → Microphone
- Find "NurseKind AI" in the list
- Toggle it ON (green)
- Return to app and try recording again
Recording Fails or Won't Save
Check storage space:
- Settings → General → iPhone Storage
- Need at least 500 MB free
- Delete unused apps/photos if needed
Check microphone hardware:
- Test with Voice Memos app - if that works, it's not the hardware
- Make sure no case/screen protector is blocking the mic
- Clean the microphone opening gently with a soft brush
Assessment Processing Issues
Processing hangs at "Transcribing audio..."
This indicates a network issue:
- Check you have active internet (Wi-Fi or cellular data)
- Try switching from Wi-Fi to cellular or vice versa
- Make sure you're not in airplane mode
- If on campus/institution Wi-Fi, it may block certain services
Recovery: Force close the app and reopen. Your recording is saved. Tap "ASSESS" again when you have stable internet.
"Assessment failed" error
This usually means:
- Recording too short - Must be at least 30 seconds
- Audio quality too poor - Too much background noise
- No speech detected - Phone was too far from speakers
Solution: Re-record in a quieter environment with phone closer to speakers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Account & Access
Both options available:
- Institutional access: If your nursing program has a license, sign in with credentials provided by your faculty
- Individual student access: Purchase credits directly through the iOS app at $19.99 per assessment
Institutional licenses offer unlimited assessments at a much lower per-student cost. Ask your nursing program coordinator if they offer NurseKind AI access.
For institutional accounts: Contact your faculty administrator or email hi@nursekindai.com with your institution name.
For individual accounts: Tap "Forgot Password?" on the login screen and follow the email reset instructions.
Privacy & Data
Security:
- All recordings encrypted in transit and at rest
- Stored on FERPA-compliant cloud infrastructure
- Only you and authorized faculty can access your assessments
HIPAA Note: NurseKind AI is an educational tool, not a medical records system. DO NOT record patient names, MRNs, or other identifying information. Focus on the communication interaction itself.
Yes. On the assessment details screen, tap the trash icon. This permanently deletes:
- The audio recording
- The transcript
- The assessment report
Note: If your institution requires assessments for coursework, check with your instructor before deleting.
Assessment Questions
Not directly. The app only assesses new recordings made within the app. However, you can:
- Play a previous recording out loud and re-record it
- Keep in mind audio quality may degrade with re-recording
Best practice: Record interactions in real-time using NurseKind AI for highest quality assessment.
Most sessions are graded in under 60 seconds, regardless of recording length.
You'll see progress indicators for "Transcribing" → "Analyzing" → "Complete"
The AI uses voice characteristics to separate speakers. To improve:
- Have the nursing student speak first in the recording
- Avoid talking over each other - take turns speaking
- Keep consistent distance from phone for both speakers
- Record in quieter environments
Note: Even if labels are generic, the AI correctly analyzes the first speaker (nursing student) behaviors.
The AI is calibrated to research-based humanistic nursing standards. Lower scores typically mean:
- Using closed questions vs. open-ended
- Task-focused language without empathy
- Not acknowledging patient emotions or concerns
- Directing rather than collaborating with patient
What to do:
- Read the Stage 2 feedback carefully - it shows exactly what to improve
- Look at the quoted examples from your conversation
- Practice the suggested alternative approaches
- Track your progress across multiple assessments
Remember: This is a learning tool. The goal is growth, not perfection.
Credits & Purchases
Apple App Store purchases can take a few minutes to sync:
- Force close NurseKind AI completely
- Reopen the app and wait 30 seconds
- Tap Settings → "Restore Purchases"
- Wait a few minutes for credits to appear
If credits still don't show after 24 hours, email hi@nursekindai.com with your Apple receipt/order number.
AI Patient Simulation
AI Patient Simulation runs in a web browser on desktop or laptop computers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). It is not currently available in the iOS or Android mobile apps. Make sure your browser has microphone access enabled before starting a session.
Each scenario has a configurable time limit set by the scenario designer (default is 5 minutes). You can end a session early using the "End & Grade" button, but sessions shorter than 10 seconds cannot be graded. Aim for at least 30 seconds for meaningful feedback.
Yes. Faculty can view student simulation results alongside real assessment results in the student detail view. Each result is labeled with a source badge (Simulation or Assessment) so they are easy to distinguish. Simulation data is also included in the faculty metrics dashboard and per-student analytics.
