🚀 Getting Started

New to NurseKind AI? This guide will walk you through your first steps with our iOS app.

Download and Setup

  1. Download the App: Search for "NurseKind AI" in the iOS App Store or use the direct link from our website.
  2. Open the App: The app will request microphone permissions - tap "Allow" to enable recording functionality.
  3. Check Your Credits: New users start with the credits provided by their institution or can purchase credits via in-app purchase.

Purchasing Credits

If your institution doesn't provide credits, you can purchase them directly in the app:

Using Promo Codes

If your instructor provided a promo code:

  1. Tap the Settings icon (gear symbol) in the app
  2. Select "Enter Promo Code"
  3. Type in the code exactly as provided (codes are case-sensitive)
  4. Tap "Redeem" - your credits will be added immediately
Pro Tip: Ask your nursing faculty if they have institutional promo codes available before purchasing credits.

Recording Your Patient Interaction

Before Recording

Important: NurseKind AI is NOT HIPAA compliant. Never record actual patients or use real patient identifying information.

During Recording

  1. Tap "START" button (green with microphone icon)
  2. Nursing Student Speaks First: Begin the interaction - this helps the AI identify you as Speaker A
  3. Engage Naturally: Have an authentic conversation - the AI analyzes real behaviors, not scripted responses
  4. Optimal Length: Aim for 5-10 minutes - enough depth for meaningful feedback
  5. Tap "STOP" button (gray) when finished

After Recording - Getting Your Assessment

  1. Review the Transcript: The app automatically transcribes your recording with speaker labels (Speaker A = Student, Speaker B = Patient)
  2. Tap "ASSESS" button (blue) to analyze the interaction - this uses 1 credit
  3. Wait for Analysis: Processing typically takes 30-90 seconds
  4. Review Your Results: You'll see:
    • Humanism Score: Percentage showing person-centered vs. task-focused behaviors
    • Overall Rating: Excellent, Good, Fair, or Needs Improvement
    • Stage 1 - Initial Assessment: Specific examples from your conversation
    • Stage 2 - Developmental Feedback: Strengths and growth opportunities
    • Stage 3 - Student Summary: Key takeaways and action steps
  5. Export Report: Tap "EXPORT TO PDF" to save your assessment for your portfolio or faculty review

Understanding Your Score

Your humanistic behavior score evaluates:

Score Interpretation:
80-100%: Excellent - Consistently demonstrated humanistic behaviors
65-79%: Good - Strong foundation with room to deepen therapeutic presence
50-64%: Fair - Mix of task and person-centered approaches
Below 50%: Needs Improvement - Focus on the developmental feedback for specific strategies

Common Issues & Solutions

App & Recording Problems

Solution:

  1. Go to iPhone SettingsPrivacy & SecurityMicrophone
  2. Find NurseKind AI in the list
  3. Toggle the permission ON (green)
  4. Close and reopen the app

If still having issues, delete and reinstall the app, then grant microphone permission when prompted at first launch.

Checklist:

  • Remove phone case if it covers the microphone
  • Clean the microphone opening (small hole at bottom of phone)
  • Hold phone 6-12 inches from speakers - not too close, not too far
  • Check that phone is not in silent/vibrate mode
  • Disable Bluetooth headphones - use phone's built-in microphone
  • Close other apps that might be using the microphone

Try these steps:

  1. Update to latest iOS version (Settings → General → Software Update)
  2. Update NurseKind AI to latest version from App Store
  3. Free up storage space - app needs room to store recordings
  4. Force quit the app: Swipe up from bottom, swipe up on NurseKind AI
  5. Restart your iPhone
  6. If problem persists, delete and reinstall the app

Note: Requires iOS 15.1 or later. If your iOS is older, you'll need to update your device.

Analysis & Assessment Issues

This indicates a network issue:

  1. Check you have active internet (Wi-Fi or cellular data)
  2. Try switching from Wi-Fi to cellular or vice versa
  3. Make sure you're not in airplane mode
  4. If on campus/institution Wi-Fi, it may block certain services

Recovery: Force close the app and reopen. Your recording is saved. Tap "ASSESS" again when you have stable internet.

The AI uses voice characteristics to separate speakers. To improve:

  • Have the nursing student speak first in the recording
  • Avoid talking over each other - take turns speaking
  • Keep consistent distance from phone for both speakers
  • Record in quieter environments

Note: Even if labels are generic, the AI correctly analyzes the first speaker (nursing student) behaviors.

The AI is calibrated to research-based humanistic nursing standards. Lower scores typically mean:

  • Using closed questions vs. open-ended
  • Task-focused language without empathy
  • Not acknowledging patient emotions or concerns
  • Directing rather than collaborating with patient

What to do:

  • Read the Stage 2 feedback carefully - it shows exactly what to improve
  • Look at the quoted examples from your conversation
  • Practice the suggested alternative approaches
  • Track your progress across multiple assessments

Remember: This is a learning tool. The goal is growth, not perfection.

Credits & Purchases

Common issues:

  • Case-sensitive: NURSE1 is different from nurse1
  • Already used: Most codes work only once per account
  • Expired: Some codes have time limits
  • Wrong spelling: Double-check with your instructor

If provided by your institution and still not working, contact your faculty or email hi@nursekindai.com.

Apple App Store purchases can take a few minutes to sync:

  1. Force close NurseKind AI completely
  2. Reopen the app and wait 30 seconds
  3. Tap Settings → "Restore Purchases"
  4. Wait a few minutes for credits to appear

If credits still don't show after 24 hours, email hi@nursekindai.com with your Apple receipt/order number.
